Two decades ago Montana Rio was formed by Mr. Barry Sewell, a Great Basin Buckaroo who spent a decade working on different working ranches through out north and Central Nevada. While working for different ranches he was also building custom Buckaroo hats and traded with local Buckaroos. Words got around that he makes excellent traditional Buckaroo & Californios hats. As time passed he became busier and busier. After approximately ten years of apprentice work he made a decision to start an official company named Montana Rio, Inc. Thus, Montana Rio Brand Hats were born.
In the span of twenty years the company grew into an international hat company with customers from more than twenty countries. Throughout the years, numerous of its customers would ask if the company has some fashionable and traditional attires to sell as well. Ultimately, with careful strategic planning, the company made the decision to expand into wardrobe business.
Montana Rio does not mean we are located in Montana although Mr. Barry Sewell used to live and work on ranches in Montana. Montana Rio is Spanish words for ‘Mountain’ & ‘River’. The hat company name was a way of honoring the origins of Buckaroo & Californios traditions, that of Hispanic Californians, Nevadans, especially those descended from Spanish, European and Mexican settlers of the 17th through 19th centuries. Much of the traditions, cultures and art work were influenced by Spanish, Mexicans and Europeans who immigrated to America West to work and learn the trade of ranching.
“A hat can magically transform the way you see yourself and the way others see you, for there is no greater cultural icon than the hat you wear. It is a powerful symbol of who you are or aim to be.” ~ Barry Sewell, Montana Rio Founder & Master Hatter
